The Ibero-American Association of Distance Higher Education (AIESAD) is an entity established to promote development in Ibero-America, through distance education. Among its aims are: research, exchange of information and experience.

AIESAD established the Ibero-American Review of Distance Education as a mean to promote international diffusion on research and innovation in the field of open and distance learning – in all its different types and methods. Ried, published since 1998, was successor of former Ibero-American Review of Higher Distance Education, created in 1988. Initially it was edited at the National University of Distance Education (UNED) in Spain, AIESAD´s Presidency and Secretary's Office headquarters. Late in 2005, this International Association ordered RIED´s edition to the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), in Ecuador, in both versions, printed and electronic. Even though, editorial address remains in Spain (UNED), under UNESCO Chair Department and its Main Director.

Since 2006, Ried is available in printed and electronic versions with identical contents. At the moment, all volumes are digitized. Printed version can be addressed by subscription – click left button in menu on screen. At the moment, electronic version is open to all academic and investigating communities dealing with distance education through website http://www.utpl.edu.ec/ried/

Published bi-annually, RIED can be edited as a “Monograph” or as “Miscellaneous”. Each monograph is coordinated by a researcher who is trained in the subject matter.

RIED is gradually including standards established for scientific publications. With this purpose a prestigious Scientific Committee along with an external assessment group look after the quality of the articles published – using the “peer-reviewed” system.
